India Johnson

India Johnson is an Iowa-based artist who makes sculptures, installations, and participatory projects for churches and libraries. India received an MFA from the University of Iowa Center for the Book in 2020 and is a founding member of LGBTQ Iowa Archives and Library. Her critical writing about the book as sculpture was included in SONNET(S) (Ugly Duckling Presse, 2020). India’s current project is Thread Library, a collection of donated thread with a card catalog. Thread Library tours public libraries, engaging a general audience with a mobile exhibition and a performative lecture about textiles as information. More in Instagram @indi.gram and @thread_library_.

“I often display my work in churches and libraries. These settings highlight the connections my work draws between textiles, information, and the numinous. Dom Sylvester Houedard (dsh) is a major inspiration for my work. A bookbinder by training, my domain is not the concrete poem but rather the concrete book: language in which three-dimensional space becomes a structural element.”
